The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
True are the words of God the Almighty.
