The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
