The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
