The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 in which you are now living 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
