The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 For you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) are in this city. 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
