The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
