The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 And by the moon as it follows it (the sun); 2 and by the day as it displays the sun's glory, 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 And by the heaven and Him Who built it; 5 by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out 6 and by the soul and that (Power) which designed it 7 and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety, 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 And he will indeed fail who corrupts it. 10 In their presumptuous insolence the Thamud called the Truth a lie 11 When the most wretched of them was sent forth. 12 then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' 13 But they cried him lies, and hamstrung her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin, and leveled them: 14 He did not fear the consequences. 15
