The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the sun and its rising brightness 1 and by the moon as it follows it, 2 And the day when it revealeth him, 3 by the night, when it envelops it! 4 And by oath of the heaven and by oath of Him Who made it. 5 And the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 By the soul and Him Who propertioned it, 7 And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness, 8 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, 9 and truly lost is he who buries it [in darkness]. 10 Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, 11 When among them the great wretch arose, 12 although God's apostle had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to God, so let her drink [and do her no harm]!" 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 And He does not fear the consequence thereof. 15
