The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy. 21
