The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 As for he who gives and fears Allah 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 But save him who fears 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 only seeking the Face of his Lord the Most High; 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
