The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night as it envelops; 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 and rejects what is right, 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 none shall enter it but the most wicked, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
