The Night (Al-Layl)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him. 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 And indeed, soon he will be very pleased. 21
