The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 And he is going to be satisfied. 21
