The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created- 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One 3 who taught by the pen, 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 Nay! man is most surely inordinate, 6 Because he sees himself free from want. 7 Surely to your Lord is your return. 8 Bethinkest thou him who forbiddeth, 9 A servant when he prays? 10 What is your opinion – if he were upon guidance, 11 or if he commands others to maintain piety!? 12 Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it? 13 Does he not know that God observes all things? 14 No indeed; if he does not desist, We shall drag him by the forelock; 15 by the lying forelock steeped in sin. 16 Then, let him call his assembly, 17 We will call the guards of Hell (to deal with him)! 18 No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh. ۩ 19
