The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 arise and give warning! 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 it will be a hard day 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 and sons standing before him, 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he beheld, 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
