The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Read with the name of your Lord Who created, 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read, for your Lord is most beneficent, 3 The One Who taught to write with the pen. 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 And yet, but yet man is rebellious, 6 Because he considers himself self-sufficient. 7 Indeed towards your Lord only is the return. 8 Have you seen one who prevents 9 A votary when he turns to his devotions? 10 What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided 11 Or enjoins Righteousness? 12 Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away? 13 Does he not know that Allah does see? 14 By no means! If he desist not We shall seize and deal him by the forelock 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 So let him now call his gang! 17 We, will call the Zabania (the harsh angels of Hell). 18 No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh. ۩ 19
