The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created, 1 Created man from a clot. 2 Recite! Your Lord is the most Honorable One, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 By no means: Verily man exorbitateth. 6 Because he sees himself free from want. 7 However, (all things) will return to your Lord. 8 Have you seen him who restrains 9 A slave when he prayeth? 10 Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?- 11 Or enjoins piety? 12 Tell me if he (the disbeliever, Abu Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e. this Quran), and turns away? 13 Does he not know that Allah sees? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 his lying sinful forelock. 16 So let him now call his gang! 17 We will call the angels of Hell. 18 No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh. ۩ 19
