And who does greater evil than he who forges against God a lie, or cries lies to His signs? They shall not prosper, the evildoers. 21 And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day We will gather them all together; then We will say to those who associated others with Allah, "Where are your 'partners' that you used to claim [with Him]?" 22 Then they shall have no proving, but to say, 'By God our Lord, we never associated other gods with Thee.' 23 See how they will lie about themselves. And lost from them will be what they used to invent. 24 And of them are some who hearken unto thee, and We have set over their hearts veils lest they understand it and in their ears heaviness, and though they see any sign they will not believe therein; in as much as when they come to thee, they dispute with thee, then who disbelieve say: this is naught but the fables of the ancients. 25 And they bar others therefrom and go far away from it: but they destroy none but themselves, and perceive it not. 26 And could you see when they are made to stand before the fire, then they shall say: Would that we were sent back, and we would not reject the communications of our Lord and we would be of the believers. 27 The truth they used to hide will become all too clear to them. But if they were sent back, they would return to what they had been forbidden. For they are indeed liars. 28 And they said: "There is no (other life) but our (present) life of this world, and never shall we be resurrected (on the Day of Resurrection)." 29 If thou couldst but see [them] when they shall be made to stand before their Sustainer [and] He will say: "Is not this the truth?" They will answer: "Yea, indeed, by our Sustainer!" [Whereupon] He will say: "Taste, then, the suffering that comes from your having refused to acknowledge the truth!" 30
