We created and shaped you, then told the angels to prostrate themselves before Adam. All the angels obeyed except Satan who did not. 11 [Allah] said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?" [Satan] said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay." 12 Said He, 'Get thee down out of it; it is not for thee to wax proud here, so go thou forth; surely thou art among the humbled.' 13 Said he, 'Respite me till the day they shall be raised.' 14 Said He (Allah): 'you are among the respited' 15 He said: As Thou hast caused me to remain disappointed I will certainly lie in wait for them in Thy straight path. 16 then I shall come on them from before them and from behind them, from their right hands and their left hands; Thou wilt not find most of them thankful.' 17 He said, "Get out of here, despised, and rejected! I shall fill Hell with all of those who follow you." 18 "O Adam! dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden, and enjoy (its good things) as ye wish: but approach not this tree, or ye run into harm and transgression." 19 But Satan tempted them so that he might reveal to them their nakedness which had been hidden from them. He said, "Your Lord has forbidden you to approach this tree lest you should become angels or become of the immortals," 20 Satan swore before them that he was giving them good advice. 21 So he cheated both by delusion. And when they had tasted the tree, their shameful parts became apparent to them, and they both covered themselves with the leaves of Paradise. (Then) their Lord called to them, saying: 'Did I not prohibit you to approach that tree, and did I not warn you that satan was your clear enemy' 22 They said: "O our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we shall certainly be lost." 23 He said, "Go down from here as enemies to each other. For a while, there is an abode for you and a provision on earth. 24 He said: "Therein shall ye live, and therein shall ye die; but from it shall ye be taken out (at last)." 25
