And We sent to no city a prophet [who was denied] except that We seized its people with poverty and hardship that they might humble themselves [to Allah]. 94 We then replaced their misfortune with well-being until they were relieved and began saying, "Our fathers had also experienced good and bad days." Suddenly, We struck them (with torment) while they were all unaware (of what was happening). 95 And if only the people of the cities had believed and feared Allah, We would have opened upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth; but they denied [the messengers], so We seized them for what they were earning." 96 Do the people of these towns now feel secure against the coming of Our punishment upon them by night while they are asleep? 97 Or, are the people of the townships secure that Our wrath would not come upon them by daylight while they are disporting themselves? 98 Do they feel secure against God's devising? No one feels secure against God's devising except for those doomed to ruin. 99
