The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ ALIF LAM RA. These are the verses of the Book and the perspicuous oration. 1 The unbelievers would haply like to wish that they had submitted (and become Muslim). 2 Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know. 3 Never did We destroy a population that had not a term decreed and assigned beforehand. 4 Every nation can only live for the time appointed for it. 5 They say: 'You to whom the Remembrance is sent down, you are indeed mad. 6 Why do you not bring to us the angels if you are of the truthful ones? 7 We send not the angels down save with judgment, and then they would not be respited. 8 It is We who have sent down the Reminder and We will, most surely, safeguard it. 9 And assuredly We have sent apostles before thee among the sects of the ancients. 10 But never came a messenger to them but they mocked him. 11 Even so We make a way for it (that is, the Admonition) in the hearts of the culprits (like a hot rod); 12 who do not believe in it, although the way which those [evildoers] of olden times had to go has long been within their ken. 13 Yet even had We opened to them a gateway to heaven and they had ascended, on and on, up to it, 14 They would surely say: intoxicated have been our sights; aye! we are a people enchanted. 15
