The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
99 verses, revealed in Mecca after Joseph (Yousuf) before Animals (Al-An 'aam)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Ra. These are the verses of the Book and the glorious Quran. 1 It may be that those who disbelieve wish ardently that they were Muslims. 2 Leave them to eat and enjoy, and for aspiration to involve them in play – so they will shortly come to know. 3 And never did We destroy a township but there was a known decree for it. 4 No nation can anticipate its term, nor delay it. 5 They say: "O thou to whom the Message is being revealed! truly thou art mad (or possessed)! 6 "Why bringest thou not angels to us if it be that thou hast the Truth?" 7 We send not the angels down except for just cause: if they came (to the ungodly), behold! no respite would they have! 8 We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption). 9 And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], among the sects of the former peoples. 10 And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him. 11 This is how We make the mocking* enter the hearts of the guilty. (* The acts of disbelief.) 12 They do not believe in it, and indeed the example of the former people has already passed. 13 Even if We opened out to them a gate from heaven, and they were to continue (all day) ascending therein, 14 They will say all the same: "Our eyes were dazed (and clouded over). We were a people ensorcelled." 15

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
