The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
99 verses, revealed in Mecca after Joseph (Yousuf) before Animals (Al-An 'aam)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Ra; these are verses of the Book and the bright Qur’an. 1 Again and again will those who disbelieve, wish that they had bowed (to Allah's will) in Islam. 2 so leave them to eat and enjoy themselves and let them be beguiled by vain hopes; for soon they will realise [the truth]. 3 Never a city have We destroyed, but it had a known decree, 4 No nation can outstrip its term, nor do they put it back. 5 They say: "O thou to whom the Message is being revealed! truly thou art mad (or possessed)! 6 Why do you not bring down angels upon us if you are indeed truthful?" 7 We send not the angels down except for just cause: if they came (to the ungodly), behold! no respite would they have! 8 Behold, it is We Ourselves who have bestowed from on high, step by step, this reminder; and behold, it is We who shall truly guard it [from all corruption]. 9 And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], among the sects of the former peoples. 10 And never came there unto them a messenger but they did mock him. 11 Even so do We [now] cause this [scorn of Our message] to pervade the hearts of those who are lost in sin, 12 They do not believe in it, and indeed the example of the former people has already passed. 13 Even if We open a door in the heavens and they ascend through it in broad daylight, 14 They would surely say: "Our eyes have been (as if) dazzled. Nay, we are a people bewitched." 15
