a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
