Indeed We created man from sounding clay made out of black smelly mud. 26 whereas the invisible beings We had created, [long] before that, out of the fire of scorching winds. 27 Behold! thy Lord said to the angels: "I am about to create man, from sounding clay from mud moulded into shape; 28 And when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, bow before him in homage;" 29 So, the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together. 30 But Satan did not; he refused to join those who prostrated themselves. 31 God asked him, "What is the matter with you, that you are not among those who have prostrated themselves?" 32 [Iblis (Satan)] said: "I am not the one to prostrate myself to a human being, whom You created from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud." 33 (Allah) said: "Then, get out from here, for verily, you are Rajim (an outcast or a cursed one)." [Tafsir At-Tabari] 34 Upon thee shall rest the curse, till the Day of Doom.' 35 Satan said, "O my Lord! Grant me respite till the Day of Resurrection." 36 Allah said: verily then thou art of the respited: 37 Till the Day of appointed time. 38 [Iblis (Satan)] said: "O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all. 39 "Except Your chosen, (guided) slaves among them." 40 (Allah) said: "This is the Way which will lead straight to Me." 41 Lo! as for My slaves, thou hast no power over any of them save such of the froward as follow thee, 42 and for all such, behold, hell is the promised goal. 43 To it are seven gates: for each of those gates is a (special) class (of sinners) assigned. 44
