Mary (Maryam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Kaf- Ha-Ya-'Ain-Sad. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 Mention of the mercy of thy Lord to His bondman Zakariyya. 2 When he softly prayed to his Lord. 3 saying, 'O my Lord, behold the bones within me are feeble and my head is all aflame with hoariness. And in calling on Thee, my Lord, I have never been hitherto unprosperous. 4 And surely I fear my cousins after me, and my wife is barren, therefore grant me from Thyself an heir, 5 “He being my successor and the heir of the Descendants of Yaqub (Jacob); and my Lord, make him a cherished* one.” (* Make him a Prophet among the Descendants of Israel.) 6 (His prayer was answered): "O Zakariya! We give thee good news of a son: His name shall be Yahya: on none by that name have We conferred distinction before." 7 'How shall I have a son, Lord' he asked, 'when my wife is barren, and I am advanced in years' 8 He said: "So (it will be). Your Lord says; It is easy for Me. Certainly I have created you before, when you had been nothing!" 9 He said, "My Lord, grant me a sign!" He said, "Your sign will be that you will not speak to anyone for three successive days and nights, although sound in body." 10 Thereupon Zechariah came out from the sanctuary and directed his people by gestures to extol His glory by day and by night. 11 O Yahya! take hold of the Book with strength, and We granted him wisdom while yet a child 12 And tenderness from Us and purity, and he was one who guarded (against evil), 13 and full of piety towards his parents; and never was he haughty or rebellious. 14 Peace be on him on the day of his birth, and on the day of his death, and peace will be on him on the day he is raised up to life again. 15
