Aaron had indeed told them earlier: "O my people, you are being only misled with this. Surely your Lord is Ar-Rahman. So follow me and obey my command." 90 They replied: 'We will not stop; we will cling to it until Moses returns to us.' 91 (Moses) said: "O Aaron! what kept thee back, when thou sawest them going wrong, 92 From following me? Then have you disobeyed my order?" 93 'Son of my mother' he replied, 'Do not seize my beard nor my head. I was afraid that you might say: "You have divided the Children of Israel and did not uphold my word." 94 [Musa (Moses)] said: "And what is the matter with you. O Samiri? (i.e. why did you do so?)" 95 He said, "I perceived what they did not see. So I took a handful [of dust] from the footprint of the Messenger and threw it in [the calf]. That is what my inner self prompted me to do." 96 Musa (Moses) said: "Then go away! And verily, your (punishment) in this life will be that you will say: "Touch me not (i.e. you will live alone exiled away from mankind); and verily (for a future torment), you have a promise that will not fail. And look at your ilah (god), to which you have been devoted. We will certainly burn it, and scatter its particles in the sea." 97 Your God is only One, Allah. There is no god, except He, alone. His knowledge encompasses all things. 98 (O Muhammad), thus do We recount to you the events of the past, and We have bestowed upon you from Ourself an admonition. 99 Whoso turneth away from it, he verily will bear a burden on the Day of Resurrection, 100 and will abide under this burden for ever. Grievous shall be the burden on the Day of Resurrection, 101 The Day when the Trumpet will be sounded: that Day, We shall gather the sinful, blear-eyed (with terror). 102 Whispering to one another: "You have tarried but ten days." 103 We know best what they say, when the fairest of them in course would say: You tarried but a day. 104
