۞ We gave Abraham aforetime his rectitude -- for We knew him -- 51 When he said to his father and his people: What are these images to whose worship you cleave? 52 They said: we found our fathers the worshippers thereof. 53 He said: Certainly you have been, (both) you and your fathers, in manifest error. 54 They said: 'Is it the truth you have brought us, or are you one of those that play' 55 'No' he answered, 'your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Originator of them, and I am among those bearing witness to it. 56 By Allah, I will certainly outwit your idols as soon as you have turned your backs and gone' 57 So he broke them into fragments, all but a great one they had, for haply they would return to it. 58 [When they saw what had happened,] they said: "Who has done this to our gods? Verily, one of the worst wrongdoers is he!" 59 Some of them said, "We heard a youth called Abraham speaking against the idols". 60 They said: 'Then bring him here so that the people may see, so that they may bear witness' 61 They said: art thou the one who hath wrought this unto our gods, O Ibrahim? 62 He said, 'No; it was this great one of them that did it. Question them; if they are able to speak!' 63 They then turned to themselves, and said: verily ye it is who are the wrong-doers. 64 With their heads cast down they said, "Abraham, you know that idols do not speak. How then can you ask such a question?" 65 Said [Abraham]: "Do you then worship, instead of God, something that cannot benefit you in any way, nor harm you? 66 Fie on you and all that ye worship instead of Allah! Have ye then no sense? 67 They said, "Burn him to ashes if you want to help your gods". 68 We said: O fire! be a comfort and peace to Ibrahim; 69 And they desired a war on him, but We made them the greatest losers. 70 But We delivered him and (his nephew) Lut (and directed them) to the land which We have blessed for the nations. 71 And We bestowed upon him Isaac and [Isaac's son] Jacob as an additional gift and caused all of them to be righteous men, 72 And We made them leaders who guide by Our command, and We sent them the divine revelation to do good deeds and to keep the prayer established and to give charity; and they used to worship Us. 73 And We gave Lut the kingdom and knowledge, and We rescued him from the township that committed vile deeds; indeed those evil people were disobedient. 74 and We admitted him into Our mercy; he was of the righteous. 75
