The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 Within gardens and springs 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
