The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
