Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 Within gardens and springs 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
