The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
