Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
