Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
