(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 You are nothing but a man like us. Bring us a token if you speak the truth." 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
