The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 and torment struck them. In this there is evidence of the Truth, yet many people do not have any faith. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
