And Jonah too was one of the Messengers. 139 When he fled on the laden ship, 140 Then lots were drawn and he became of those who were pushed into the sea. 141 [and they cast him into the sea,] whereupon the great fish swallowed him, for he had been blameworthy. 142 Now had he not been of those that glorify God, 143 He would have tarried in the belly thereof till the Day when they are raised. 144 ۞ So We cast him, sick, on a barren shore, 145 And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine. 146 And We sent him to a hundred thousand, rather they exceeded. 147 and they believed; so We gave them enjoyment for a while. 148 So inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons? 149 Or did We create the angels females while they were witnesses? 150 Unquestionably, it is out of their [invented] falsehood that they say, 151 'Allah has begotten' They are truly liars. 152 Has He chosen daughters over sons? 153 What aileth you? How judge ye? 154 Why do you not reflect? 155 Do you have clear authority? 156 Bring your book if what you say is true. 157 They have established a kinship between Allah and the angels; and the angels know well that these people will be arraigned (as culprits). 158 (They say): “Exalted be Allah above what they attribute to Him, 159 all of them except the chosen servants of Allah. 160 So surely you and what you worship, 161 shall not be able to tempt anyone away from Allah 162 Except one who is (destined) to burn in Hell. 163 (Those ranged in ranks say): "Not one of us but has a place appointed; 164 Lo! we, even we are they who set the ranks, 165 and we are of those who glorify Allah.” 166 What though they would say, 167 If we had but a reminder from the men of old 168 we would have certainly been sincere servants of God". 169 And yet, [now that this divine writ has been placed before them,] they refuse to acknowledge it as true! In time, however, they will come to know [what it was that they had rejected]: 170 Our Word had already preceded Our worshipers, the Messengers, 171 That they verily would be helped, 172 and that Our army will be triumphant. 173 So, (O Prophet), leave them alone for a while, 174 And (then) see them, so they too shall see. 175 Do they want to suffer Our torment immediately? 176 But when it descends into the open space before them, evil will be the morning for those who were warned (and heeded not)! 177 So turn thou from them for a while, 178 And watch; they will come to know soon. 179 Glorified be thy Lord, the Lord of Majesty, from that which they attribute (unto Him) 180 And peace be upon all His message-bearers! 181 It is only God, the Lord of the Universe, who deserves all praise. 182
