We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He said, "I am the messenger of the Lord of the Universe," 46 But when he brought to them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And We did not show them a sign but it was greater than its like, and We overtook them with chastisement that they may turn. 48 And they said [to Musa (Moses)]: "O you sorcerer! Invoke your Lord for us according to what He has covenanted with you. Verily, We shall guide ourselves (aright)." 49 But when We removed from them the chastisement, behold, they broke their troth. 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: “My people, do I not have dominion over Egypt, and are these streams not flowing beneath me? Can't you see? 51 Am I not better than this lowly man who can barely express himself? 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 Then when they provoked Our wrath, We took revenge on them and drowned every one of them. 55 and so We made them a thing of the past, and an example to those who would come after them. 56
