Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By oath of this clear Book. 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 We now remove the punishment for some days – so you will again commit the same. 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
