Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HA MIM. 1 By oath of this clear Book. 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29

When reading the Colorful Quran in English transliterated Arabic mode, you may not notice that there is an algorithm designed to match the pause requirements of the original Arabic scripture, (waqf signs). As you may know, the original Arabic Quran has five main types of pauses, (waqf) signs. (1) Compulsory break, where the transliteration uses a full stop. (2) Optional pause with the preference for pausing, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a probability of two thirds. (3) Optional stop with an equal preference for pausing and resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a half-half probability. (4) Optional pause with the preference for resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a chance of one third. (5) Attraction pause, also called hugging, or (mu’anaka) sign, where it is compulsory to pause at either one of two nearby positions, but not both; where the transliteration inserts a comma at either one of the two locations with a half-half probability.
