Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
