Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
HA MIM. 1 By oath of this clear Book. 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
