Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. 3 therein every wise bidding 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
