Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
