Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 therein every wise bidding 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
