Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
