Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha'. Mim. 1 By the luminious Book. 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
