The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the setting star, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 Which one of mighty powers hath taught him, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 Indeed he saw him a second time, 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 Nigh thereto is the Garden of Abode. 15 When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have whatever he fancies? 24 To Allah belong both the Next World and the present. 25
