The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it setteth. 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 something that a very mighty one has imparted to him: 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 then drew near and suspended hung, 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 by the lote tree beyond which none may pass 14 Near it is the Garden of Abode. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which covered it. 16 The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. 17 for indeed he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 and about the third deity, al-Manat? 20 What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? 21 That is indeed an unjust division. 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Is the human to have whatever he fancies? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
