A throng of the ancients 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
