A throng of the ancients 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
